The Instagram Effect on Pet Commerce in India

The Instagram Effect on Pet Commerce in India

Five years ago, most pet product purchases in India began at a neighbourhood pet store.

Today, many of them begin on a Reel.

India’s pet population has grown rapidly over the past decade. Alongside this growth, the way pet parents discover products has also shifted online. This is especially visible in lifestyle categories such as pet apparel, accessories, and grooming products.

The change is not only about where purchases happen, but where discovery happens first.

What the retail data suggests

Offline retail continues to dominate India’s pet product market.

Neighbourhood pet stores, veterinary clinics, and small specialty retailers still account for roughly 85–90 percent of total pet product sales across the country.

Online commerce contributes a smaller share overall, estimated at 10–15 percent of the total market.

However, the picture changes significantly when we look at discovery-led product categories such as apparel and accessories.

In these segments, an estimated 20–30 percent of purchases already begin online, where customers first encounter products through Instagram reels, pet creators, brand pages, and community-driven content.

For many pet parents, the buying journey now starts with seeing a product on another pet, rather than searching for it directly.

Premium and lifestyle products are seeing faster digital adoption as buyers increasingly trust “seen-on-pets” recommendations, creator reviews, and community sharing more than traditional advertising.

Discovery is shifting faster than retail

The important shift is not that offline retail is declining.

Neighbourhood pet stores will likely remain the backbone of India’s pet economy for years to come.

What is changing more rapidly is product discovery.

Pet parents today often encounter new brands, designs, and innovations through Instagram feeds, reels, and creator communities long before they step into a store or visit a website.

This discovery-first behaviour is particularly strong in categories where design, fit, and lifestyle positioning play a role in the purchase decision.

The next phase of pet commerce

The next decade of pet commerce in India will not be decided only on retail shelves.

It will increasingly be shaped in digital environments where trust, familiarity, and community conversations happen before the purchase even begins.

Feeds, reels, and pet communities are becoming early touchpoints in the buying journey, especially for premium and lifestyle pet products.

For emerging brands in the category, understanding how discovery happens may become just as important as where the final transaction takes place.
